1.      Locate two quotations that reveal the setting in your novel.  Explain what the quotation suggests about the setting and its impact on the protagonist and the meaning of the work.   Remember that setting is much more than location and may include social environment, occupations, culture, and moral attitudes.

“Bowmore county is known as cancer county.”  This quote explains what Krane Chemical has done in terms of pollution to Bowmore county.  The water is no longer drinkable, and just showering or bathing in the water could give someone cancer. Bowmore now has to import in water in order to have basic necessities and many have moved out.

“Not many had more money than the wall street guru Carl Trudeau” This quote shows the power and money that Carl Trudeau, CEO of Krane Chemical has. He uses this to secretly support Ron Fisk, a tactic  known as buying a supreme court justice. He spends over 9 million dollars in this support, in over to get a verdict that would save him billions of dollars, and make billions more.


2.      Identify four physical objects that are essential to the setting of the work and which represent one of the elements of setting listed below.  For each, explain what the object reveals about the specific element of setting and how the object helps to evoke a mood or atmosphere in the work.  Specific elements of the setting include:

  • the geographical location (its topography, scenery, and physical arrangements),

  • the occupations and daily manner of living of the characters,

  • the time period in which the action takes place (epoch in history or season of the year), and

  • the general environment of the characters (social, religious, cultural, moral, and emotional conditions and attitudes).

1. The courtroom: The majority of the beginning of the book takes place in a courtroom, where the town of Bowmore is eagerly waiting for the verdict to a 40 million dollar lawsuit. After the verdict, the cast regularly returns to the courtroom to hear and advice on appeals. The courtroom is also the location where the final appeal is ruled on.

2.Wall Street: the antagonist of the book is a major “player’ on wall street, with a net worth of over two billion dollars. he regularly flaunts his money around, such as buying his wife a 12 million dollar ring even after he lost one billion dollars, and uses his wall street influence to secretly buy a judge on the mississippi supreme court.

3. Bowmore: The city that crane chemical is polluting, also where two of the protagonists live. The city is known as cancer county, due to the amount of pollution from the old factory.

4. Mississippi: The state where the campaign for Ron Fisk is running for the Supreme court. He performs several speeches, runs ads, and travels all of the state to win support of the voters. The supreme court vote is also done around all of Mississippi.
